About PawCosts

PawCosts exists because of a number that ambushed its founder at a vet’s front desk — a $2,900 emergency bill for a dog whose “cost” was supposed to be a $150 adoption fee and a bag of kibble a month. Nobody had ever added it up. PawCosts is the adding-up, done in public, before the pet comes home instead of after the bill arrives.

Who writes this site

Daniel spent eight years managing operations for a group of animal shelters in the Midwest, where he watched the same story repeat: wonderful people surrendering wonderful animals, most often citing costs they never saw coming — the surgery, the special diet, the landlord’s pet deposit stacked on a thin month. He started PawCosts to put the real numbers in front of people at the only moment they can still change the outcome: before adoption day. Daniel lives with two cats and a senior rescue dog, all of whom appear in the site’s worked examples more often than they’d probably like.

Our editorial method

  • Ranges, not point estimates. Every price on this site is a range drawn from published 2025 US data — national vet-fee surveys, shelter and breeder listings, major pet retailers and insurer rate cards. Calculators plan around the middle and show you the spread.
  • Tools and articles must agree. Every guide uses the same figures as the calculators, and each links to the other. If a number changes, both change.
  • No sponsored rankings. PawCosts doesn’t sell placements, doesn’t rank products for commission, and doesn’t accept payment from insurers, breeders or retailers. Where the site earns money in future, it will be from clearly-labelled advertising.
  • Corrections in the open. Spot a price that’s moved in your area? Write to us. Verified corrections are applied to the calculators and noted on the affected guide.

What PawCosts is not

We are not veterinarians, and nothing here is veterinary advice — for your animal’s health, your own vet is the only authority that matters. We are not financial advisers either; our guides explain costs and trade-offs, and decisions about insurance products or savings vehicles are yours to make with the full terms in front of you. What we are is a calculator and a notebook: honest numbers, plainly explained, kept current.

The PawCosts promise

No fake precision, no scare tactics, no “free puppy” maths. If a figure on this site can’t be traced to a published price or a stated assumption, it doesn’t ship. Pets are a decade-plus commitment — the least their future owners deserve is the real total, in advance.
